This is rock and roll aimed squarely
at people who value well-crafted songs that rock ferociously
but never sacrificing the most sacred melody. It's power pop.
it's garage, it's psychedelia, it's Stratocruiser. Hopelessly
and irreverently out of step with the latest trends, Stratocruiser
laces their happy rock sounds with hooks that are deep and wide
and loud guitars that alternately are jangly and crunchy. Dollop
on a heap of vintage keyboard textures (Hammond B3's, Mellotrons,
electric pianos... mmm, creamy!) and this robust instrumental
stew of sound deftly balances the melodic flair of songwriters
Mike Nicholson & Clay Howard.
Nicholson & Howard are
veterans of revered bands such as Bullwinkel Gandhi (whose 1996
release Kung Pow! was voted #71 in a list of the top 100 power
pop albums of all time in a Swedish magazine article), The Doleful
Lions, Barely White, Diggin' Taters, Bangers -n- Mash and more.
Taking their cues from "all the good stuff from 1964 - 1979",
Stratocruiser have unveiled their 4th album in the spring/summer
of 2008. What started as demos ended up becoming master recordings
with the upgrading of some home studio gear. Add Peter Holsapple
from the dB's (and Hootie, and REM and the Continental Drifters)
on keyboards and ten new songs that bridge the gap between old-school
arena rock and sweet creamy power pop emerge as a mest-have release
for 2008.
Whether it's the playful Monkee-isms
of Make It Work or the heavy Britpop of the title track,
Egg Shells delivers serious rock goods.
Unlike previous releases there
are no guests on this record, just the four swell guys of Stratocruiser
plus the above-mentioned Peter Holsapple. So pick up Egg Shells
and experience some true honest rock in the new old-fashioned
way.
